The high risk of springtime motorcycle crashes

On Behalf of | May 13, 2026 | Motor Vehicle Accidents |

Spring could be a very dangerous season for motorcyclists. It is when many riders get back out for the season, but other drivers may not be prepared for this influx of smaller vehicles. This can lead to dangerous driving behaviors or mistakes, such as drivers not seeing motorcycles and causing accidents.

One reason why this happens is known as inattentional blindness. Researchers who study the phenomenon are quick to point out that the brain has to process a large amount of information when someone is driving. To do so, it prioritizes certain information and often fills in the gaps or omits other types of information.

Unfortunately, these reports find that motorcycles are generally low on the priority list for many drivers, who may not expect to see them. This often causes drivers to look at a motorcycle and never really register that the bike is there at all.

How would this cause an accident?

One common way that this leads to an accident is when a driver is making a left turn. Researchers note that these accidents are one of the most common threats that motorcyclists face.

In theory, the driver who is turning left has to yield the right of way to an oncoming motorcycle. But due to decreased awareness and inattentional blindness, that driver may not see the motorcycle and could turn in front of them. This can lead to a very violent collision for the motorcyclist, as they strike the side of the vehicle during the turn.

Motorcyclists who have suffered injuries in these accidents need to know how to seek financial compensation for medical bills, lost wages and other damages.
